Locally Sourced Dinner
Let me begin with saying we had the absolute BEST experience at then, strangers, now great friends, house a few weeks back for what they call their traditional "Garden and Gun Dinner". My husband came home one day stating that a couple stopped by on the farm and they had invited us to attend one of their garden and gun dinners. Of course, I leapt for joy. This is something that has been turning its wheels in my mind for a good while and was PUMPED to hear someone was doing it! So, we showed up and were NOT disappointed (I mean, how could we ever be disappointed showing up to a meal- regardless, a locally sourced FROM THEIR BACKYARD meal)!
The table was set and Abby and Ryan were in the kitchen preparing appetizers and the meal. Both nurses at Vandy (Abby RN and Ryan NP), Ryan is the hunter and everything comes from their garden at their home. They have chickens in the backyard and tomato plants galore.
The spread consisted of:
- deviled eggs three ways
- cheese stuffed jalapeño poppers with bacon (bacon sourced from Katharos Farm in Columbia, TN)
- sourdough crackers with smoked bass dip
- baba ganoush with carrots
- tomato pie
- pickled cucumber salad with cherry tomatoes
- pan fried eggplant with green beans
- tomatoes with charred okra and balsamic dressing
- dove with jalapeño jelly
- stuffed venison backstrap
- apple pie with whipped cream (apples from Morning Glory Orchard in Nolensville, TN)
I mean (insert heart eye emoji!)
There were 2 other couples there (4 total): some of their dear friends and the some of our dear friends, the Lankfords, who started Cul2vate.
Such a fun fun night and highly encourage anyone and everyone to begin treating meal times like this! Nothing is better than food right out of your backyard shared with strangers who turn into great friends.
